Helping Hands Could you use a hand with some of those everyday jobs that can suddenly become a little more challenging? Are you willing to lend a hand to someone in our community who needs a little bit of help? Either way, Helping Hands would love to hear from you!
Helping Hands is a network of volunteers from the members of St John’s Lutheran Church Unley who lend a hand to others when they need it. Whether it’s cooking a meal, mowing lawns, giving a lift to church or even changing a light bulb – Helping Hands works at two levels. N Firstly, the service is a great help for the individual or family and helps build relationships at a one-to-one level. N And secondly, it builds up our congregation to be a community of people who care for each other. We look out for each other and know that we can get help when we need it. “God can bless you with everything you need, and you’ll always have more than enough to do all kinds of good things for others.” 2 Corinthians 9:8 Who does the Helping Hands team help? Anyone within the St John’s Unley community. People may need help for a variety of reasons, including (but not limited to): · Poor health / accidents / physical or mental challenges · Big life events (arrival of new family members, bereavement, moving house, loss of a job) · Recently arriving in our community (ie moved from the country, interstate, overseas) What help can we give? · Lovely, home-cooked meals · A hand with the gardening (mowing lawns, keeping weeds under control) · General home maintenance (cleaning gutters, fixing leaky taps etc) · Driving (to hospital, the shops, kids to school, to church on Sunday) How does it work?
Who will be part of the Helping Hands team? The Helping Hands team is a network of volunteers from throughout the congregation who can be called on to help out when they’re needed. Volunteers can nominate the kind of help they can give and the times they know they’ll be available to help. The Helping Hands coordinator will link the volunteer helpers with the people who need a hand. All our volunteers undergo a police check (a very simple online process) and LCA safe place training. This is for two good reasons: 1. It helps us to provide a safe environment for all people involved to always feel comfortable and confident to either ask for help or to offer help to others. 2. It helps us to protect our congregation and the wider church from any incidents that might cause damage to our reputation and undermine the good work we are doing to share God’s love and care.
